Day 2 Auckland – Hobbiton (280km approx. 4 hrs) (B)
In the morning depart Auckland in private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide to Matamata.
After leaving the motorway south of Auckland, the Waikato River will accompany you for much of your journey through the green countryside. Places of interest along the way include the wine growing area of Te Kauwhata and the coal mining town of Huntly.
Enjoy your way through farmland to the Waitomo Caves, where huge limestone caverns are filled with stalactites and glow worms.
Our next destination is “Hobbiton”. Discover the real Middle-earth on the most picturesque private farmland near Matamata, where you will visit the “Hobbiton” Movie Set from “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” film trilogy in a fascinating two-hour guided tour.

The set has been completely rebuilt and can be seen as it appeared in the films. “The Green Dragon Inn” is now open and is a special feature of our tours. All tours groups visit the inn as part of their tour and receive complimentary refreshment. There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm. As the “Hobbiton” Movie Set is located on a real New Zealand farm, you can also cuddle and bottle feed the pet lambs. You can relax and soak up the unique atmosphere with a great cup of coffee or a light meal in “The Shires Rest” Cafe. Visit “The Shire Store” (below the cafe) for some special souvenirs to remind you of your visit.

Day 3 Hobbiton – Rotorua (74km, approx. 1 hrs)
Today you will travel to Rotorua by private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide and experience the Maori culture.

Day 4 Rotorua – Tongariro National Park (215km, approx. 2 ½ hrs)
The road from Rotorua to the Tongariro National Park leads through the active geothermal area to Taupo. On the way you could have a stop at the Aratiata Rapids just off State Highway 1 north of Taupo, which were used for a scene in Peter Jackson’s latest movie – “The Hobbit” - in which film crew dropped 20 to 25 barrels down the rapids from a dam's spill gates each time there was a dam release. The scene is part of an escape where Bilbo Baggins rescues the dwarfs from elves by hiding them in barrels which float downstream. Taupo city on the north-eastern shore of Lake Taupo, which is actually a large crater filled with water. It is with 616 km New Zealand’s largest lake. You follow the road along the east side of the lake towards Tongariro National Park.

Tongariro National Park Info:
New Zealand’s first national park, Tongariro was gifted to the New Zealand people in 1887 by the Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe and is now a World Heritage area. The Tongariro Crossing is regarded as one of the best one-day walks in the world. The 80,000ha Park is enjoyed and explored year-round by hikers, skiers, botanists, geologists and nature lovers alike.
The Tongariro National Park was the location for the “Plains of Gorgoroth”. The plains themselves are vast and can be seen from either the National Park side of the park or the Desert Road.

Day 5 Tongariro National Park – Wellington (330km, approx. 4 ½ hrs)
Depart Tongariro to Wellington in private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide.
After you leave the Tongariro National Park the road leads south to the Kapiti Coast and further down to Wellington.
Before you leave the Tongariro area you could have a walk through “Mordor”. There are short walks as well as longer walks.
Soda Springs walking track (6km, approx. 2 hrs)
The walk begins at the Mangatepopo situated 13.4 km from Whakapapa. The track to Soda Springs is part of the Tongariro Alpin Crossing Track and follows Mangatepopo Stream. Ngauruhoe’s most recent lava flows appear dark in contrast to the older flows which are slowly revegetating. Under the headwall of the Mangatepopo Valley these old water springs create a small oasis of lush yellow mountain buttercups and white foxgloves in summer.
Mangawhero Falls walk (5 – 10 mins)
The walk starts from a car park on Ohakune mountain road, 13 km past the Department of Conservation field centre. This short walk provides excellent view bush line; the beach forest is stunted because of the hash climate, spectacular icicles form around the falls in winter. This area was used as filming location for “Ithilien” in “The Lord of the Rings”. While travelling through “Ithilien”, Frodo, Sam and Gollum stop and make camp to rest and eat. While there, Sam and Gollum argue over cooking and to prepare rabbits. Frodo hears something and slips away. Sam notices and goes to find Frodo. Just as he does so, they see a force of “Haradrim” with “Oliphaunts” making for “Mordor”. Suddenly, the “Haradrim” are ambushed by the “Gondorian Rangers of Ithilien”. The three are then captured by the Rangers and ordered to be brought to Henneth Annûn by Faramir, the Captain of the Rangers.

Day 6 Wellington:
Today you are going to follow the Hobbits on their way. Accompanied by your Driver/ Guide, you will carry out a half day Lord of the Rings location tour in seat in coach, which will bring you the best 7 locations in both the North and South of Wellington. This is the best way to show you Wellington's Lord of the Rings locations in half a day with the experience of knowledgeable Lord of the Rings specialist guides.
We cover a lot of ground, but there is enough time to explore, recreate scenes for yourself and work out how the movies were made. The first location is exploring Mount Victoria and the 'recreation greenbelt' where the Hobbits hid and were chased by “Ringwraiths”.
From Mount Victoria you will drive north to explore the Hutt Valley. Stops include the Hutt River (“Anduin”) and Harcourt Park (“Isengard”). In Kaitoke Regional Park we include morning/afternoon tea under the elevish trees of the Rivendell location. We also spend time at “Minas Tirith” and “Helms Deep” at an old quarry closed to general visitors.

Day 7 Wellington – Nelson
Transfer from your accommodation to the Interislander Ferry Terminal in private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide. Ferry crossing to South Island from Wellington to Picton with the Interislander ferry.
Arrive Picton where you will be collected by your South Island Driver/ Guide and continue your South Island portion of the tour.
Picton Info:
Picton is situated at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound one of four Sounds which make up the Marlborough Sounds. The Queen Charlotte Sound is the main thoroughfare for the interisland ferries which provide passenger, car and rail transport to Wellington. The Marlborough Sounds are renowned for the safe opportunity they provide for outdoor activities. Fishing, walking, tramping, kayaking and cycling are popular with overseas tourists and locals. Make Picton your base to explore the Marlborough Sounds and surrounding areas
Depart from Picton to Nelson 110 km approx. 1 ½ hrs
The picturesque seaside town of Picton is the gateway to the marine, forest and island attractions of the Marlborough Sounds. The drive to Nelson first takes you to the town of Havelock, which is known as the Green Shell Mussel Capital of the World. Nearby Canvastown is a place to explore old gold mining fields – thousands tried to get rich here in the 1860s.

Nelson - on the western tip of New Zealand’s South Island – is renowned for golden beaches, quality seafood and wine, and a significant artistic community. New Zealand’s sunniest region is also a popular destination for fans of the great outdoors. Nelson’s inspirational landscapes and vibrant creative environment offer visitors the opportunity to meet and mix with local artists and craftspeople, visit their studios, and participate in art tours and workshops.
Mount Owen at the southern end of the Kahurangi National Park was the setting for “Drimdale’. This mountain is located near Nelson, which is home to many of the crafts people who created film props.

Day 8 Abel Tasman National Park
Today you are going on a half day scenic cruise. You'll get a chance to see and photograph the world-famous Split Apple Rock from close up, native fur seals (Kekeno) in their natural habitat, golden sands and the crystal-clear waters of Anchorage and Medlands Bay beaches all before you return to Kaiteriteri.
If you want, you can find “Chetwood Forest” near “Bree”, where the Hobbits first flee, which was filmed on Takaka Hill, between Golden and Tasman Bay near Nelson. From Motueka, you head toward Kaiteriteri which is the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park, but instead of entering the park, you climb up the 972 metre summit of Takaka Hill. You can also access Takaka Hill by road when heading toward the Totaranui end of Abel Tasman National Park. Takaka Hill is the only place in the world except for Italy where you can find rocky marble outcrops.

Day 9 Nelson – Franz Josef Glacier (480km, approx. 6 hrs)
Depart Nelson to Franz Josef Glacier in private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide. On your way you will pass Murchison, where you can learn about 1929’s massive earthquake. Pan for gold in Lyell Creek before you navigate the awesome Buller Gorge. Westport is known as a coal mining town and a base for outdoor adventures.
Visit the local coal mining museum, then strap on your walking shoes to investigate the seal colony. The road to Punakaiki hugs the coast, providing spectacular views of wild beaches and the tempestuous Tasman Sea. Punakaiki is famous for its Pancake Rocks and booming blowholes. It is the centrepiece of the Paparoa National Park, which is packed with a variety of stunning landscapes. There are many excellent coastal and inland walks in this area. Greymouth has a long gold mining history. It’s the largest town on the west coast and is known for its awesome seascapes. The local brewery runs tours or you can catch up with west coast history at the museum. White water rafting, sea kayaking and gold panning are other things to do. From Greymouth you will drive on the State Highway 6 along the savage west coast, about 200 km through Hokitika to Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.
Franz Josef Glacier Info:
First explored in 1865, the Franz Josef Glacier has been moving forward at a rate of about 1 metre a day since 1985. Previously it was in retreat.

ay 10 Franz Josef Glacier - Queenstown (352km - approx. 4 ¼ hrs)
Leaving behind the lush vegetation of South Westland you will travel via private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide through the hills and valleys of the Haast Pass where roadside walkways provide easy access to a number of waterfalls and mountain pools. Emerge into the tussock country of the Southern Lakes district as you pass lakes Wanaka, Hawea and Dunstan. The “Ford of Bruinen” is located in Arrowtown which is twenty minutes from Queenstown. The Ford is a stone throw from the centre of Arrowtown. From the main street you just need to walk to the nearby river bank and walk up stream for about 200 meters. The scene where the river was flooded was filmed in a different location, namely the Shotover River at Skippers Canyon.
The fruit and wine growing region around Cromwell leads you to the craggy confines of the Kawarau Gorge famous for its historic bridge and some spectacularly located vineyards. Finish this full day of sightseeing in beautiful Queenstown.

Queenstown is known for its rugged mountains, majestic lakes, crystal clear air, and just so much to do. From bungee jumping to wine trails, jet boating to tramping, dining out to skiing, the tricky part is extending your stay to try and fit everything in.

The Glenorchy Safari of the Scenes takes you from Queenstown to Glenorchy stopping at breath-taking viewpoints along the way.
Beyond Glenorchy follow the Dart River to the spectacular filming location for “Isengard”. This location offers stunning views of Mt Earnslaw. Heading to Paradise to discover the location for the “Forest of Lothlorien”. Leaving Glenorchy and returning towards Queenstown
you will stop at 12 Mile Delta to explore the location of the “Ithilien Camp”.

Day 12 Queenstown – Milford Sound - Te Anau (170km - approx. 2 ¼ hrs)
Depart Queenstown to Milford Sound in private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide.
High country landscapes and trout fishing rivers are features on the road to Te Anau. The first part of the drive clings scenically to the edge of Lake Wakatipu. Te Anau Township sits on the shores of Lake Te Anau. From here, the delights of the Fiordland National Park are within easy reach, including the start of the Milford Track. Cruise on the lakes, walk the tracks and visit the Department of Conservation wildlife centre. The Te Anau Glowworm Caves are an excellent adventure.
The Mavora Lakes was the location for “Fangorn Forest and Nen Hithoel”. The lakes are situated off the Te Anau Highway pass Mossburn or you can take an unpaved road near Te Anau which takes about 45 minutes by car. Just before the turn off to Mavora Lakes, you will see the “Fangorn Forest” to your left. Mararoa River, South Mavora close to the village of Mossburn near Te Anau was the location for “Silverlode River”. Mararoa River is a picturesque river abounding with Rainbow and Brown trout.
Milford Sound Cruise:
The Milford Sound is one of the biggest tourist attractions in New Zealand. The boat cruise takes you through the Milford Sound to the open Tasman Sea. Enjoy the massive mountain sides, the gorgeous water falls and the landmark of Milford Sound, the impressive Mitre Peak. With a little luck you will spot seals, dolphins or penguins.

Day 13 Te Anau - Dunedin (290km - approx. 3 ¾ Shrs)
Depart Te Anau to Dune4din in private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide. Leaving the stunning mountains and fiords of Te Anau, your journey along the main highways and motorways today will showcase the best of the Southern land and its scenery. Deep rivers, lush farmland and nature parks are just an appetizer for what this area of the South Island has to offer. Located at Mandeville Airport (on route to Gore) Croydon Aviation Heritage Trust offers flights in vintage and classic aircrafts, including the Tiger Moth, Fox Moth and Dragonfly. Located in Gore, Hokonui Moonshine museum celebrates the history of illicit whisky making in the southern region that stemmed from origins in Scotland. Or visit Lake Waihola. This tidal freshwater lake is located half an hour south of Dunedin. It is surrounded by wetlands, including the internationally renowned and protected Sinclair Wetlands that are home to many species of wading birds.
Dunedin Info:
Dunedin, one of New Zealand’s oldest and most important settler cities, has a strong Scottish heritage. It is the doorway to the Otago Peninsula and the Southern Scenic Route along the south eastern coast. Dunedin was planned in the early 1840s as a Scottish settlement. First settlers arrived soon after and, with the discovery of gold in the 1860s, the town grew to become one of New Zealand’s important commercial centres. Many Dunedin buildings date back to the gold rush. First Church, University of Otago’s clock tower, Larnach Castle and Otago Boys High School were built in the late 1800s, and
Dunedin railway station was completed in 1906. Today the station remains, fully restored to its former glory. The ornate Flemish Renaissance-style architecture features white Oamaru limestone facings on black basalt rock. The sheer size, grandiose style and rich embellishments of the station earned architect George Troup the nickname of Gingerbread George.

Penguin Place is a private conservation effort aimed at saving one of the rarest penguins from extinction. It offers visitors an opportunity to experience the coal for of conservation. Via a unique system of hides, track and tunnels you can gain first hand information plus enjoy fantastic photographic opportunities of these wonderful birds from distances down to less than a meter.

Day 14 Dunedin - Christchurch (360km - approx. 5 hrs)
Depart Dunedin to Christchurch in private vehicle with your Driver/ Guide. Your journey north is flavored with history. Oamaru has a population of around 12,000 and an impressive heritage. Many of the elegant historic buildings were made from the local sandstone. Visit the Harbour-Tyne area - the best-preserved collection of historic commercial buildings in New Zealand. You should also check out the penguin colony, the museum and the pretty public gardens. River crossings are a feature of the journey north. On the way you are passing Timaru a small but beautifully formed city, Waimate and Oamaru, where you can watch penguins. The main attractions at the way to Christchurch are the Moeraki Boulders. These ancient spherical boulders are up to four meters in circumference and are lying scattered along Moeraki’s beach. The flat, straight highway leads you into Ashburton, a large town that serves the local rural community. The route to Christchurch is about as straight and flat as roads get in New Zealand. On a clear day, the Southern Alps provide outstanding scenery. The town of Rakaia sits on the southern side of the Rakaia River, and it’s ‘the salmon capital of New Zealand’. The Rakaia Bridge spans 1.8 kilometers of one of the world's best examples of a 'braided' river system.
Christchurch Info:
The South Island’s largest city, Christchurch is also called Garden City and is the gateway to the South Island. Bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, it is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the Southern Alps. There is nowhere else in the world where, within two hours of an international airport, you can ski at a world-class alpine resort, play golf, bungee jump, raft, mountain bike, hot-air balloon, wind surf, whale watch and visit internationally-acclaimed wineries and gardens.
